Jourdanton Powerlifting Places 3rd Overall at State and Brings Home Another State Champion This past Friday in Abilene, Texas, the Jourdanton Powerlifting Team delivered a stellar performance at the THSPA State Championship, bringing home both a silver medal and another State Champion! Seniors Joseph Hernandez and Danilo Lugo entered the arena as seasoned veterans. This was Joseph’s third year as a State Qualifier and Danilo’s fourth. Despite battling a recent injury, Joseph was a true example of grit, posting a 650-pound squat to set the tone. His performance immediately put him in contention for the top spot, a fierce competition between three other lifters for the title. The contest came down to a dramatic final deadlift between Joseph and his talented opponent from a neighboring South Texas town. Joseph’s outstanding performance earned him a well-deserved silver medal in a fierce battle to take it all. With bench press of 370 and a deadlift of 610, Joseph’s impressive total of 1,630 pounds secured his place on the podium and earned 5 points toward the team’s overall standings. Meanwhile, on the neighboring platform, returning State Champion Danilo Lugo was putting on a historic performance of his own. Danilo’s first attempt of 825 pounds broke his own squat record set the previous year as a Junior. But he wasn’t done yet—he continued to break his own record, ultimately posting an 860-pound squat. Danilo went on to set a personal record with a 575-pound bench press. When the competition moved to deadlift, every lift was a new record: 655, 685, and a finish of 715 pounds. Danilo’s final total of 2,150 pounds was an impressive 375-pound lead over second place, making it the second-highest total (the highest being 2,175 pounds) in THSPA history across any division or weight class. This incredible feat not only secured Danilo’s State Championship title but also cemented his place in powerlifting history, while adding 7 points to the team's standings. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Joseph and Danilo, Jourdanton Powerlifting earned an impressive 3rd place overall in the State standings. The team's hard work throughout the season paid off as they proudly represented their community and left a mark on the State competition. As their coach, I am incredibly proud of the lasting effect these Seniors have made on the program. Their attendance was impeccable, they were willing to help and mentor team-mates at every level of skill and ability and have set an example of maturity in their mindset and approach to training and competition. To finish 3rd in the State while bringing home another State Champion is a testament to the strength and unity of our team. I would also like to thank Assistant Coach Tammy Torres for her hard work and for the spark that she has brought to the powerlifting program this year. With the season now behind us, the Jourdanton Powerlifting Team is already looking ahead to next year, where we hope to build on this success and continue our tradition of excellence.
